What is restless leg syndrome?

Restless leg syndrome (RLS) is a condition that causes uncomfortable sensations and urges to move your legs. It often occurs in the evening when you’re lying down or resting.

Moving your legs can ease unpleasant symptoms, but RLS can interfere with getting a good night’s sleep. Treatment with Dr. Kasha and his team can offer you relief.

What are the symptoms of restless leg syndrome?

Common symptoms you might experience with restless leg syndrome include:

  • Urges to move your legs or arms
  • Poor sleep
  • Leg discomfort
  • Daytime sleepiness
  • Nighttime leg twitching
  • Symptoms that get worse in the evening
  • Symptom relief with leg movement

If you have RLS you might experience sensations of creeping, crawling, throbbing, pulling, itching, or aching in your legs.

What are the risk factors for RLS?

While anybody can develop restless leg syndrome, it usually isn’t related to a serious underlying medical problem. However, it sometimes accompanies other conditions, such as:

  • A family history of RLS
  • Pregnancy
  • Hormonal changes
  • Neuropathy
  • Kidney failure
  • Iron deficiency
  • Spinal cord problems
  • Past spinal blocks

You might be more likely to experience RLS if one or more of these conditions are present.

How does my provider diagnose restless leg syndrome?

To diagnose restless leg syndrome and develop a treatment plan, Dr. Kasha reviews your medical history and asks questions about your symptoms.

He completes a comprehensive physical examination. Dr. Kasha and his team at Desert West Vein & Surgery Center team might recommend blood tests, an ultrasound, or a sleep study.

What are my restless leg syndrome treatment options?

To reduce RLS symptoms and give you a better quality of life, Dr. Kasha might recommend the following treatments:

  • Medications
  • Massage
  • Warm or cold packs
  • Regular exercise
  • Avoiding caffeine
  • Foot wraps

His team works with you to develop a treatment plan that matches your needs and makes changes to treatment regimens as needed to deliver the best outcome.
