What does a vein clinic do?

If you suspect you have spider veins or varicose veins and are thinking about visiting a vein specialist, or perhaps your doctor has referred you to a vein center, you may plausibly be concerned about what the first appointment will be like. That is totally understandable if this is your very first trip to a doctor for a vein condition.

We have discussed below some of the things to expect in your consultation with a vein specialist. Read on to have a nodding acquaintance with what is required of you before, during, and after the appointment.

On your first appointment, the vein specialist will want to look at your medical records, your family’s history for venous disease, and recent medications, so make sure you have documents detailing these at hand.

Physical examination

To identify the affected areas, you will be taken through a physical exam that focuses mostly on your legs and functioning of your veins. Your vascular and family history will come in handy at this stage of the appointment.

If you are found to have vein disease, e.g. varicose veins or spider veins, your vein doctor will perform an ultrasound scan on your legs to establish the extent of the damage. Vein disease symptoms are usually unique in each patient and the vein specialist wants the specific details of your condition with the help of ultrasound for a specialized treatment plan.

Result interpretation

The specialist will use the findings of the physical exam and ultrasound to determine the severity of your condition and the best treatment for you. This appointment is usually separate and involves a review of your diagnosis, treatment options, and guidance on post-procedural requirements.

Our doctor at Desert West Vein & Surgery Center will also listen to your questions and try to clarify any terms or instructions you may not understand.
